Paper fear

Some people see things as they are and say "Why."

I dream things that never were and say

"Why not."

-George Bernard Shaw

I've bought new paper and have it stacked on my shelves in my cupboard and there it sits. I'm doing what I tell others not to do. I am savouring the fact that I do have a variety of paper - pretty much any type for any medium that I want to use. But I stick with my large and small sketch books. I think I'm waiting for a significant piece of work to pop into my head before I break out the 'good stuff'.

However tonight I will change that.

I have been caressing some of my stash of Sabretooth paper and am anxious to see how it performs. Then there is the Canal paper - handmade in delicious colours and textures. Then the buttery soft hand made vellum...and so on. See what I mean?

No I WILL break into a sheet of the newer paper and play with it. After all it is only paper isn't it?

It's funny how common an aversion to marring a piece of paper/fabric/canvas is, isn't it? I wrote a blog entry on this very subject a while ago:

For me, it's all about the fact that I'm destroying something to create something else and the niggling little doubts in my mind about whether the new something is more worthy than the old. That said, perhaps your best move might be to order more paper. The knowledge that more is on the way will allow, nay obligate, you to use what you already have.

You read my mind Vicky. I have a batch of paper waiting for pickup in Torbay post office at the moment! So onto the cupboard to break into my stash.

I'm not sure quite what prevents us from altering the surface of something new and pristine. Its a bit like the fear that strikes when confronted with a large blank sheet and wanting to perform well for it.

Jeanette, I wonder if all artists have a thing for paper? I love new paper, any kind of paper, even spiral bound lined notebooks. New paper holds such promise. There are so many wonderful things that can be created with it. I love shopping for any kind of art material, but there is something about paper...
