VSD March

Table for two
watercolour & pen and ink

This is my effort for the Virtual Sketch Date. The reference was supplied by Stacy Rowan. These little house finches are appealing and common here, likely common everywhere.

I struggled with this on a couple of counts. I have drawn very few birds and to do justice I usually use a high resolution image which satisfies the detail freak in me. Perhaps I should have tackled it with oils so I could forget about some of the detail in them.

However, in the spirit of VSD, here they are - table for two in a corner of spring.

Your birds have a sweetness about them. I love your title!

This is absolutely lovely; the drawing is beautiful and the focus on the birds just right!

This is lovely Jeanette. I knew that the feeder was a bit of a compositional problem in the photo - you resolved it in a great way!

You have nice details...don't worry about them :D.

Lovely watercolor. Your birds are fantastic, great detail.

This is a lovely watercolor! The birds look fantastic. I did a pencil sketch for the same reason. I knew if I used watercolor or acrylic, I would try to get too detailed.

It's hard to let go of the details for me too. You did a great job on the birds. I especially like how you got the perspective of their heads. The red one is not only looking to the right, his head is also tilted towards us. Your attention to detail really comes through.

Jeanette, I think your birds are great. They don't look too loose to me. I thought it was interesting that you tackled this in watercolor and I used pencil. It seems we switched media this month. :)

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments. Detailed or loose, its always a challenge to know which way to go on a piece. I think this one seemed to sit on the fence with a foot in either technique. :)

Great job, Jeanette. I couldn't get to the challenge this month.

Jeanette, I like the way you decided to crop the image. To me the birds are much mire interesting than the feeder that dominates the photo.
