Signs of spring

It must be spring.  The little pond in the garden is thawing rapidly.  Snowbanks on the side of the road diminish under a cool sun as I type .  Woodpeckers are drumming on the house early in the morning.  And Tripod is challenging ownership rights over his territory with another cat.

Unfortunately Tripod forgets that he's at a disadvantage, having three legs, and sometimes comes away wounded as he did last evening.  Nothing serious, just the usual tomcat scuffles but enough to make him feel sorry for himself for 24 hours.  I want to have him neutered but The Other One won't hear of it. Why do men put their concept of manhood onto a cat?

This morning it was frosty and as I waited for the windscreen to clear, I took a few photos of a thin layer of ice that had formed overnight on the pond.  Ice crystals pushed out from a sheet of solid ice, crisscrossing and mimicking the tangle of grasses on the bank of the pond.  The reflections of the bright blue sky and trees on the still water were diffused in the ice.  I love how ice changes and softens reflections.  Its as if a different world is trapped within in or underneath it.  It always reminds me of Through The Looking Glass and What Alice Found There - the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.  If you walk through, everything changes.

What is spring like where you are?

What a stunning photo, Jeanette!

Btw, tell The Other One cats have no sense of gender identity. On the downside, I had Digby fixed at 6 month old(he's now almost 15 yrs. old)and he still gets into territorial disputes with other cats that happen onto his turf.

Things are putting out buds here and the crocus bloomed. I have been feeling a bit upbeat.

Tell Tripod I am on his side.

I know it's spring because I wanted to walk outside yesterday. My first stirring for physical activity in the outdoors is always my barometer for spring. We're a long way from crocuses yet but the sun is hopeful. Doesn't the change in time creating more daylight hours always add such a hopeful feeling to your life?

that's a great photo - and would work really well as a painting, abstracted a little maybe?

The new look to the blog is gorgeous

A pure chance capture for this photo Billie. I love the shapes the ice was taking.

By choice I would never have a male cat - or dog as a rule. They're always too aggressive.

I'm a ways off from crocuses and buds yet Peggy, but we'll get there.

I'll make sure Tripod knows. :)

Yes, the need to get outside - and the ability to do so without piles of snow and bitter winds is a good indicator spring is on the way Margaret.

The extra daylight puts me in spring mode.

Thanks Vivien. The photo is pretty abstract on its own and perhaps an interesting painting could come from it.

Oh, I'm so glad our spring is warm, sunny, with trees budding out - posted a few sky and tree pics on my blog to share. This reminds me of your ice paintings and I wonder if you'll do this at some time.
