Fall shows

I took part in the Art Association's Fall Exhibit on Sunday. There were 38 exhibitors and I had four pieces in the show. I had chosen graphite for all the pieces and in retrospect wish I had put in some more colour as most of the other entries were paintings in one form or another. But you can never anticipate attendance at shows or what will appeal to anyone. Thirteen percent of the pieces sold overall, but none of mine. I don't mind not selling, as I like the chance to put my work into the public eye and get some exposure.

I wasn't organized enough for that show. I had the pieces ready, but I was volunteering to do some shifts to cover the show, the first starting at 8am. Too early to be organized and I had forgotten my business cards, so couldn't put them in place. And it was pouring rain and miserable out, but the trees in fall colours still shined through.

And there will be two more next times this year. There is another show in early December of small works in downtown St. John's and a fundraiser for the Health Care Foundation on November 8 & 9 and 25 & 26 which I will participate in. More details on those later.

Hi Jeanette,

It's so hard to predict what will sell and what won't. I'm going to put some of my mixed media work in the December show and test the waters. I've always put watercolors in but I've only done mixed media in the last year.

Gina, its so much down to who will come in and what their preferences are, its almost impossible to predict what will sell.

I'm going for a mix of oils and coloured pencil - just watch, they'll all want graphite then lol

The black frames work really well with the graphite - that's a nice looking set you've got there.

13% sales is pretty average for an art society show. I'm not sure why such a low percentage should typically be the case but I bet a quite a lot of art societies would like to know why!

In my experience and from observations, there's only thing that consistently sells and that's good work at affordable prices - which is generally but not always small as well.

However if your art society show gets galleries visiting to look at the 'talent' on offer then there might be very positive repercussions....... :)

I am so sorry I missed commenting on your show. My computer crashed, and it has been slow coming out of the hole I put myself into.
The work looks lovely, and I agree it is putting it out there for the world to see, over and above the sales. Those are nice, but it is the sharing that makes me want to go home and create more. When the sales are on my mind, then I have art lag.
