Drawing from memory has advantages and disadvantages. We all have an internal Utopia where nothing is true to reality and that comes out when we draw from memory. We know shapes and volume but don't often reach perfection in creating something from our imagination. Its edges are fuzzy and likenesses warped and molded through our experiences and visions. It can become freeing and provide very interesting results, but if you're aiming for realism, it rarely works.
This piece came from that place in my head. I'd seen the sun rising over the lake on the way to work and captured it in my memory then tried to recreate my version of it tonight.

This is really beautiful Jeanette, and it's also true what you say - but I think we must accept the outcome for the beauty it is and not negate it by trying to compare it to reality. This is really lovely...
utopia would be nice but I think it would get boring after awhile. would be brighter colours maybe but would it capture the energy you have here?

Thanks Maree. I liked the flow of ink and pastel. The colours more so than form give the illusion of sunrise here.
Utopia is my retreat when life goes upsidedown Jennifer. :) No, its not always the best place, but it feels good sometimes.
The colours do give energy - blues and yellows seem to do that well.
and on grey days like this utopia seems pretty nice :)
Memory is a good because we tend to recall for longer periods of time what made the most impact on us. I am finding that out more and more as I work with my Reading a Garden series. In addition, what we recall is often embellished when it is something we were originally attracted to , thus heightened colour.
I love the vibrancy and looseness of this piece. Interesting effect with the ink stained paper too.

This is absolutely gorgeous! These colors are so rich and ones I am naturally drawn to for some reason - very earthy. And as was already mentioned, the energy of this piece really brings me in - I want to be there too :-)
This has a wonderful abstract quality about it, Jeanette. Isn't it great to be an artist? We can create any vision we want, make any changes to reality we wish.:) The freedom is beyond exciting!
