Field and studio

While I'm busy in the studio, life outside on the farm is also busy.  Early this morning I walked over to the vegetable garden and amidst gorgeous zucchini blooms and sprawling squash plants, rose scarlet veined beetroot, rainbow chard and these lovely French breakfast radishes.  Can you tell that I grow things that have drawing potential?   The colour of the radishes appealed to me so I brought a couple in and sketched them with coloured pencil.  I don't like the taste of radishes but they're very pretty in a salad and make wonderful drawing models.

I was given a bucket full of capelin and have been busy printing and freezing lots for later in the year.  These little fish always appeal to me and also keep me ensconced in the studio.  The are small and delicate and the colours in them are wonderful when they're fresh and these were literally gathered off the beach before ending up in my hands.  Blues, greens, violets and silver make them perfect for drawing painting and printing.  You will be seeing lots more of these.  But I also have a freezer full of other fish that need printing.  These I hope to make some progress on when I get some holidays in a week or so.

I would like to know when you get time to look after a garden. Your energy amazes me. It's almost too much for me to get vegetables at the supermarket! You radishes are lovely and I agree that they are more likable in in colour and form than taste.

I potter in the garden Margaret. I pull weeds and harvest things from time to time, but mostly The Other One believes it is his domain. :)

Would you believe I was looking at some similar radishes at the market today? And not for eating (they are usually too hot for me) but for drawing. I noticed several things like the radishes that I miss buying for my husband. Hot peppers and Brussels sprouts are two more. Very good job on the radishes.

Great minds think alike Jeanne! Yes, little things like buying certain foods bring on memories don't they?

If you cut up radishes into slices or dice and fry them, they lose their pepperyness and taste very much like fried potatoes. Really.

I agree--radishes are beautiful "subjects." I always mean to ask you--are the capelin good for eating? Or do they exclusively wind up in your artwork!? I was trying to figure out exactly how big they are, but then I look at one of your pieces of artwork hanging here in front of me and realize I can see that right here!

Sue, lots of people do eat capelin. Personally, I don't like them and think they have a strong taste. They are quite small, fitting in the palm of your hand more or less.

And yes, you do have one of them there to judge by! :)

Jeanette, everyone in my family likes radished so we have them on hand quite often. The french breakfast radishes are our favorite and we look forward to buying them from the farmers' market. I sketched one or two of them back in the spring as part of my daily sketching project. I've never tried to cook radishes since we enjoy their taste, but I'll have to give a try now.
