Earth's Eye

 Earth's Eye
6 x 12   oils

A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature.  It is earth's eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.  ~Henry David Thoreau

Late last summer I had taken some images of the water surface of Gallow's Cove Pond just as sun was setting.  There was a little chop on the pond and the movement of the water was hypnotizing.

I started out then using an old 6 x 12 canvas, repainting it and laying down values for the water, but it didn't go any further.  I picked up the canvas again the other night as I had my oil palette out and started adding detail to the surface.

It now looks abstract with images that I can read into it almost like watching the flames of a fire.  Moonlinght, water, sky, cloud, mist, fog....its a combination of everything.  As the surface of the old canvas was a bit textured, it shows through under the current layers.  I'd prefer a smooth surface for this so this will go to the 'study' section of my studio wall while I consider its fate.

Jeanette you should be proud of this one ... it turned out perfect. I get lost in all the waves, just as I do when I study the waves I see from the shore. Great job.

It is a lovely piece Jeanette. Your love and fascination with water comes very clearly through your work - checking your blog is one of my favorite parts of the day!

Great job with the colors and the undulation of the waves. A little piece of lake. Love it.:)

This is looking really interesting Jeanette - when I scrolled down I actually had a sense of the waves moving... It'll be wonderful when it's finished.

Thanks Nancy. Water is always inspiring.

You're right Rose, it has become my obsession. I'm glad you enjoy it.

I'll probably still tweak it a little Billie, but like the shapes and movement of it.

Its good if it gives that impression Hedera. I could play with it forever adding detail upon detail.

Waves and ripples have such subtle shading, they're fascinating.

Thanks Casey, I'm glad that you enjoy the video. The fish shapes and colours combined with the music seemed to work well.

I accidentally deleted that video as I was trying to replace it with another updated one tonight. I'm uploading it again, but you may like to recheck the code for it in case it doesn't work.
