Pouch Cove Highway

I keep meaning to do some night time paintings but never seem to get around to it.  Living in the country means that the dark is reallllllllly dark with very little lighting besides the odd streetlight and the adjustment of your eyes to the light levels.   Of course on the road, there are passing cars which are a blessing and curse as they go by in terms of lighting.

This painting was done as the sun was going down.  Its amazing just how quickly it does go down and how little time there is to capture that exact moment in light. Its part factual, part memory and part a wish and a prayer.

The sky was dramatic over the sun drenched clouds at the horizon and the lights of the passing car added interest and life to the scene.

This view of the Pouch Cove Highway is the one I travel daily and the main route off the road I live on.  No sidewalks, lots of trees and the road stretching on to the sea in several directions.

This is wonderful! I love the name of PouchCove Highway... You live in a very beautiful area. Your clouds look so intense and mesmerizing leading off into the distance. Nice job!

Thanks Katherine. The sky was amazing that evening.

Pouch Cove is an old community perched on the edge of the ocean and its actually pronounced pooch cove, not pouch, as most people think. Some dirivative of some mispronounciation no doubt :)

Your description of painting night scenes is so on! Watching the sun and moon rise and set gives a clear indication of how quickly time doth flee! Love this piece, Jeanette. Such depth and drama!

Wow. These looks fantastic. Night time sure is a spectacular sight. I'm just curious, why does it called Pouch Cove?

That sky is so imposing. I really enjoy that shape of light off in the distance, almost like you're racing time.

You're dead right about the sun setting so quickly, love this Jeanette!

Thanks Pam. There is something so mysterious about shapes and how colour is sucked out of the landscape as darkness falls. I love trying to capture that here.

Thanks synthetic grass, the scene does have drama at night with the contrast of sky and landscapes.

And I guess Pouch Cove is called such because its shaped like a pouch. I'm really not sure of the history behind the name to be honest.

Good description of the scene Shane. The clouds were unique that evening, like a strange storm was brewing.

All we need are some moose and a few porcupines on the road Jen. :)

Sharon, we must have posted at the same time. And yes, when it drops, it really drops. Painting outside at this time of day takes speed for sure.

Yes moose are a real menace on the roads, don't want to wish for them.
