Stringy

After many months of painting water and fish, I wanted something different.  I wanted portraits again.

There is endless interest in the human head and face, with so many people to choose from.  I thought I'd get some practice in with some people I know before I hunt down new victims :).

This is one of my husband's friends who helps out in the woods.  Brian, often referred to as 'Stringy' was a  neighbour when I lived in Pouch Cove and his children went to school with mine. Odd how people get nicknames, more so males, isn't it?

This is in oils on a 12" x 12" canvas panel completed in about 4 hours.

Ohhh Jeanette this is absolutely wonderful.
I love looking at your brushstrokes and the coloring is perfect.
While being away I spent some time re-reading Richard Schmids book Alla Prima and after looking at his work with people in them I have a new respect for people who even attempt painting people.
Beautiful work ... and I'm sure you are enjoying working on something away from your norm.

Its good to have a change Nancy and a bit like going back to my roots, as my origins in art were drawing and always people.

I have a few ideas going around in my head and need to get some portrait practice in to see if it works out.

He hasn't seen it yet Sue and may not for awhile. But I hope he will like it when he does.

This is an excellent portrait! I find them to be so exciting, trying to capture all the little features and shadows that define a person and make them unique. I like the different colors that you used in his skin tones. How does one know where to put those colors that we wouldn't necessarily think were flesh tones, like the grays and the reflections from the background? You did it so naturally!

Thanks so much Katherine. I enjoy the process of building a portrait, choosing colours, etc. I'm pleased with how this one turned out and of course it looks better in person - computers never seem to do real justice to paintings do they?
