Not all of the time at least. After a particularly gruelling week leading up to Christmas the beginnings of a self portrait show the mood. This study for a portrait shows a toned orange/red background that I quite like as the colours show well against it and the warmth of the tone shows through in places as well.
Here are a few progression shots. This study is on a 12 x 12" panel in oils.

I much prefer portraits that show a mood and make a person more human. This is going to be a good one! Hope you have had time to slow down and enjoy :)
Baeautiful! Beautiful!
Hi Jeanette,
Belated Merry Christmas and best wishes for a Happy New Year.
It's a wonderful self-portrait! As you know, portraiture is my favorite and this is definitely a keeper.
I'm currently juggling three of them and wondering if we'll be moving in mid-February or April.
I'll save you the details and just say keep up the great work.
Sincerely,
Gary.
you do look a tad bored ;) really nice painting tho :D
Thanks Rhonda and I agree. I like 'out of the ordinary' portraits. I hope your Christmas was fun and New Year's a very happy one.
Thanks so much Geraldo.
Gary, I hope your Christmas was good and I know the new year will be full of new adventures for you. Yeah, I'm still envious... :)
The portrait is the cranky side of me and I like the change from traditional portraiture. So when are we seeing what you're working on??
Ha Jen, yes it has that bored look too, doesn't it? I like the change of pace.
