Ice

Iced
yupo, watercolour 7 x 10

My mind is still working around elements of water and a series around that is part of my 2009 plan. I have looked at different forms of water, such as fog, snow and ice as, being winter here, there seems to be lots of it and will be for awhile. There are also creatures that live in or are dependent on water which also interest me.

I have been experimenting with different mediums and supports that I haven't used for awhile and in this piece I used Yupo. This support is a plastic sheet that doesn't absorb water so the paint sits on top until it dries. It can be washed away down to brilliant white again or different effects can be obtained through adding other things to the sheet. In this piece I tried some crumpled plastic film, removing it after the paint had dried, or nearly dried.

The effects left on the surface remind me of ice crystals or the look of ice under your feet when you stand on a deep frozen pond or lake. I'll do some more experimenting with this technique and see if it goes anywhere. I want to see how much I can layer it without it disintegrating the underlayer or muddying the paint too much. It seems from what I've read, you either love or hate yupo!

I've seen Yupo used before and it gives amazing qualities to the artwork. Perfect for your ice! I'm surprised the underlayers don't wash off if you layer the paint though.

This is beautiful Jeanette. Very crystal like, transparent. It also reminds me of what I use to see when I was underwater looking up toward the sky. I spent a lot of time underwater here in SoCA

I've never heard of this type of support before. Sounds interesting, and the technique gave you a very nice cracked ice effect.

I'm not sure if you can get yupo in the UK - this really does feel icy - interesting effect :>)

This is great Jeanette!! It reminds me of the water flowing underneath a thin layer of ice. I've never used yupo and don't even kow if I'll get it here. Nice work

I'm still playing with layering Anita, so its hard to say what it will do. I'm being cautious!

Yes Robin, it is like an underwater view looking skyward, isn't it? Its quite open to interpretation, which is what art is all about.

Its a unique surface Jennifer, unlike anything I've used before. If you can find some, have a play with it.

Its open to lots of experimentation Vivien. It might be something you'd like to get your hands on one of these days.

Thanks Ronell. The effect using plastic wrap on the surface is interesting. I want to try other things with this support and see what comes out. I think the results will be more abstract rather than representational, due to the nature of the surface.

Jeanette, Yupo is the way go if you're looking to loosen up your painting style. i've seen artists on WC do amazing work on this stuff but it's near impossible to work tight on it. i love the crystalline effect you achieved with the cellophane.

Jeanette this is lovely an very successful, your transparencies are immaculate. I'll be looking forward to the rest of your experiments with this technique.

Cool, Jeanette! (Pun intended!) And I'm someone who likes Yupo and the look it can give. I doubt if you'll be able to layer it though - maybe if you're extremely careful.

I like to see the results of your experiments so "Play On"!!!!!

Billie, its interesting to use as I imagine its a surprise everytime you use it.

Thank you Mary. It has a real abstract feel to it which is fairly new to me. I trust your eyes to guide me there.

Jan what have you done on yupo? Is is looser and a sort of one shot deal? I'm wondering if I can create something recognizable on it.

Know nothing about Yupo except what I have seen on wc. This looks fantastic and icy. I'll be watching.

Hey, Jeanette, the last time you blogged about Yupo, I dug out some paintings I did a long time ago. You can see them HERE

This is so beautiful. You have really caught the beauty/impression of water in it's many states all at one time!
