Fish box

I found this long slim box awhile ago and thought it could be useful to decorate at some point but I wasn't sure with what. Inspiration hits me at the most ungodly hours sometimes.  Today it was at 5am.  Tripod was outside, it being a very warm night and he decided that there was an cat intruder he should see off.  The sounds of hissing and spitting and growling woke me and I had to get up to sort him out and haul him inside.

Once I get up, I can't go back to sleep, no matter what the time.  So at 5am, armed with coffee and a box sitting in front of me this little capelin appeared on the box.  It is the perfect size and shape for this fish and with the seeming lack of capelin on the beaches this year, it may be all I see of them or it can preserve the one fish that I get!

Tonight I added some colour to it.  I am using watercolour.  On wood you say?  Yes, I like how it stains the wood instead of painting it and gives it an antique feel.  The initial layers are down along with a little silver gild for fishy sheen. Tomorrow I'll add some details and deepen the colours.  The box is 8 1/4 x 2 x 2".

I love being able to see the wood grain. I have to tell you I love your horse drawing below and can't wait to see what you do with it.

Brilliance can strike at the oddest hours. Love your capelin box. I also like functional art. Will you be varnishing this to protect the painting?

Thanks Margeret. I hope to get some time to work on the horse piece soon. He's a handsome guy.

Billie, the capelin just seemed to fit well on this box shape.

And yes, I'll varnish it it protect it.

This is great. Very interesting that it is done with watercolor.

That's lovely Jeanette - I think you may have started a whole new product line. Tripod deserves a fishie!

Wow, interesting and beautiful. Tripod did well. :)

Peggy, watercolour still lets the woodgrain come through where other paints would cover it. It gives a sort of aged feel to it.

Cynthia, thank you.

Katherine, it could be fun making a littler series of boxes perhaps.

And fish for Tripod? Tripod doesn't like fish - unless its human grade tuna. Light and flaky only. Fresh fish of any kind and he turns up his nose and walks away. Fresh anything in fact. He only eats tuna and a particular brand of dry catfood. He's an odd one.

Jo, thank you. Its good to try different things now and then. :)

Using the watercolor was unusual but it leaves the beauty of the wood - good idea for this one. Tripod gets some tuna for inspiration, I think - or at least waking you up so you became inspired by the morning :) I can see a fisherman or woman buying this to keep their little bits and pieces of fishing gear inside...or just to have on a table to show the beauty of this little fish.

Tripod should get whatever he wants as that box is perfect. The choice of watercolor is also perfect. I'm the same way about not being able to go back to sleep if woken up but you do better with the time than I do!
