Virtual Sketch # 2

Tripod 8 x 10
copyright Jeanette Jobson

Last week I emailed a reference photo to those participating in a Virtual Sketch. This was Rose Welty's idea and she and I participated in one a few weeks ago. We decided to continue on and invited others to join which they did. Ten people in all took part, including myself.

The concept is simple. One person provides a reference image and you have a week to draw it, then post it on your blog. Its always interesting to see the different approaches to subjects. The subjects can push us outside our comfort zones but that's a good thing, its how we learn and grow as artists.

I've had my plate pretty full this week, and worked on Tripod, the cat, off and on during that time. Tripod has many obsessions. One of them is paper and in this instance he was lying on the paper I was drawing on. I don't think I've gone a wonderful job of this. His eyes are too far apart I think. This cat has a big square head, a real tom cat face and I may have over emphasized that and then the paw was a bit of an afterthought, so its too small. But there's always next time.

The following individuals took part in the Virtual Sketch this time and I'd encourage you to visit their blogs and see what they have produced from this reference. All drawings will be posted sometime today, Sunday, May 18th. I say sometime, as we didn't set a deadline for posting time, just the day. As people are spread over the globe, posting times will be staggered. Keep checking in during Sunday and you'll find some amazing art I am sure.

Rose, Jeanne, Stacy, Belinda, Jennifer, Gayle, Teresa, Katherine and Paulette (Teresa's image is posted on Rose's blog as Teresa doesn't have a blog)

So nice and soft. Great job as usual. Is his head swelling from all the attention?

Tripod looks great and I've enjoyed looking at others interpretations of him on their blogs.

I very nearly joined in - maybe next time if you'll let me:)

Jeanette, he's lovely. Your soft touch just sings with the fur!

Very nice job.

So is Tripod enjoying all of the attention today? You have made his fur look wonderfully soft abd given him a pleading look. I had trouble with his paw too and found myself wondering exactly how many toes cat's have.

Thank you for supplying the reference! It was challenging but also enjoyable to draw.

You did a wonderful job making him look really soft :)

Thanks so much for the picture to draw :)

The eyes are striking. Eyes are very important to me. They are the foundation of what the finished work is all about. I see a personality in those eyes. Loving an affectionate, but at the same time very proud. She reminds me a lot of my wife's cat, Kechara.

I would very much be interested in participating in a Virtual Sketch. It sounds like a wonderful opportunity to push myself and learn more.

Thanks for posting your work. I enjoyed it very much.

Thanks Jeanne. He's such a primadonna at the best of times, its hard to tell if the extra attention makes him worse or better!

I'm not pleased with my drawing Paulette and may have another go this week at it. Time and commitments always vie for attention with me.

Thank you Rose. Its great to see the different interpretations of this reference.

Stacy, Tripod has been looking at the images of himself and imagining he's King of the Cats right now. I just didn't draw him well in my piece. You get one thing off and everthing else goes downhill from there.

My pleasure Jennifer. I'm sorry you were ill and didn't have time to draw, but I know there will be future Virtual Sketches to participate in.

Thanks Michael. I love drawing eyes and its usually the part I start with. Tripod (a male) was a stray cat that was living in the woods then came in to stay. I think he came just so I could draw him.

I'm sure you'd be welcomed into the next Virtual Sketch.

Oops, nearly missed you Laura. I think that looking at all the drawings is the most fun of this exercise. And I know you'll be able to join in if you would like for the next Virtual Sketch.

I've been Tripod popping up on different blogs...what a famous cat!

Very nice drawing!

I really enjoyed drawing Tripod and then looking at how everyone else had drawn him. I found it really interesting to see how we all produced a good likeness using our own styles.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to participate.

I loved drawing Tripod - such a great photo to work from too!

Great eyes in your sketch. I think that's what I liked about him best - his eyes are so arresting!

Thank you for setting this virtual sketch up with Rose and for supplying the stimulus - I think an extra dollop of real tuna for the star of the show might be in order.

What a great idea, would love to join in the next one if at all possible ? Thought all the drawings were great and Tripod makes a handsome model as usual!
