Recognition

The Realist Artists Association of Newfoundland and Labrador have chosen my art piece 'The Artist's Cat' as Best of Show in the recent Spring Show that I exhibited a few weeks ago with the Artists Association of NL.

I was thrilled to receive the news and happy as that drawing sold as well. I was to be presented with the award last night at the Association's Annual General Meeting, but unfortunately was unable to attend. I will receive the award later this week however. Its good to receive recognition for work. Artists have fragile egos and every pat on the head counts.

Now to work on more ideas for the symbolic self portrait. After this week so far, barbed wire and high fences seem good choices. The sketch above was a quick line drawing, done while travelling, of a lab looking as if his walk was stopped in mid flight. Perhaps that look would sum me up about now...

Congratulations Jeanette!!! Although it doesn't come as much of a surprise. I always knew your art work was fantastic. :D But you are right, one can never hear it too much.

Wow! CONGRATULATIONS!!! It's very well deserved but, even so, you must be so pleased. Take a virtual pat on the back from me too. ;D

Thank you Stacy. It amazes me always when someone externally approves my work. I don't know why, but it does. I guess we never really believe we've done a good job on a drawing.

Katherine, thanks so much. Yes, I am very pleased. But does that mean that have I set the bar on that drawing and all others must reach or exceed the mark?

Your comments about symbolism and self-portraits put me in mind of a point in my life when I quit being a pianist. Who was it who said that art is therapy without a therapist? Self-enquiry, in a way, I guess. At one point I got sick of expressing myself in my damaged state - and went in my heart instead of my ever-so-creative head. Creative energy comes from many sources. I prefer sitting with a candle and breathing until I let out everything that feels bad and create out of sheer love, self-love, unconditional love. I ask myself, do self-portraits always have to be portraits of the ego? The spirit is pure and beautiful. C.S. Lewis wrote that it was not the painting, but what was being painted, that made really beautiful art (I paraphrase). We are all divine creation, and we would be able to see that if we cleaned up and healed our wounds! Imagine if we could paint our spirits instead of our pain . . . we'd have to forgive first, which is of course "the tricky bit". Just thought I'd share . ..

Congratulations. I believe that the picture you sold was the one of Tripod and it was one of my favorites. Those two photos I still have sitting here beckoning me.

I too enjoy line work. Sometimes I like doing more detailed work but I still enjoy my line work. Making something look like a photo and with personality with just lines and your hand.

I'm not an artist myself but I visit your blog because you are truly great at what you do! Your post made me pause and think, even when we are good at what we do we still like to be appreciated. I do appreciate your artwork!
