Roller in progress

I should be painting water, but instead I'm caught up in marbles.  Why?  I have no idea, except that they're so appealing and so....round!

I'm trying to create some pieces for a May exhibition of small works, and this may become one of them.  There's still work to be done on the marble shape. It looks a little compressed to me right now. Funny how you see these things when you step back from them for awhile.   The surface the marble is on is an old wooden board.  I'm still considering how that will be depicted effectively.

This is in oils on 4" x 12" gallery canvas and still in progress, but I'll get there.  There are just too many ideas in my head right now.

I understand your fascination with marbles...you can keep turning them, and they always appear so different! This one looks beautiful!

There are similarities in the light refractions and reflections between waves and marbles, maybe that is it? Maybe combine the two some how? There's a challenge :o)

I really like the way that you get the colour of the glass and the composition, the diagonals give a great tension. I find myself thinking is the marble rolling away or toward the edge. Very clever.

That so true Christiane. They're like little planets in their own right.

Ohhh Lisa, I like that idea. Marbles at the surf line, marbles underwater...you know you're sending me to the beach with a pocketful of marbles once the snow clears, don't you? ;)

Have fun, I can't wait to see the results.

Love the vast space on the right and the whirl in the marble - as if it's about to start rolling any minute.

I collect marbles for that very reason - they are tiny perfectly round worlds, endlessly beautiful, even the simplest of them :) Did you ever think of painting marbles in the water? I saw a photo once where low sunlight was hitting a bowl of water (or something like this, it was a close-up shot with only some of glass container showing), and the reflections and spots of color that glass and water were throwing all over the palace were stunning!

Yelena, Lisa's comment set off those thoughts about marbles in water. From in a glass or bowl of water to at the surf line or in shallow water in the ocean. Its definitely on the cards for some setting up some compositions.

The beach unfortunately is fairly inaccessible in winter unless we have a big thaw. But marbles in the snow could be another possibility...
